With this series of dancers, Sibania explores the complexity of ceramic forms through the dance that matter, brought to high temperatures, must perform in order not to collapse under its own weight.
Behind the scenes, the ceramist becomes a skilled choreographer: preparing the dancers for their debut in the great kiln, he sets the proper supports for the figures—supports that will remain only a gentle memory once they are finally revealed to the world.
Their steps emerge from the plane, their feet still bound to the earth from which they come and of which they were made, bringing to light another dance: that of clay becoming stone.
For this reason, we have chosen to present these two materials as they are:
Pure — the purity of porcelain, the warm white of kaolin, a clay freed from all impurities by water. A fine-textured white ribbon winds sinuously around the figures.
Raw — the roughness of stoneware, where the impurities of clay become richness. More grounded than noble kaolin, it recalls the warmth and labour of pastoral life, where every small thing holds value. At the base, a contrast in colour reveals a coarse texture.
